We need more many more Respiratory therapist to manager ventilators. Patients should all be intubated by a Respiratory Therapists. Respiratory therapist have been well trained to manage and care for the needs of the ventilators patient . This will free Nurses to Doctors to do the jobs they were trained for.
Man yes. I feel I want to be a respiratory care practitioner. 🤞🏻💕
FiO2 Is the “fraction of inspired oxygen” and is represented differently than what you’ve done here. 80% oxygen would be an FiO2 of 0.8. Room air is an FiO2 of 0.21 and 100% oxygen would be an FiO2 of 1.0
Peter B. 0.8 and 80% are exactly the same representation, which is the portion of inspired air that is comprised of oxygen.
Great video, so much needed in this times, thank you very much.

Learning all that I can to understand better
Thank you! am just about to start my rushed 2 week orientation period in ICU and this video is helping me understand how to look after a ventilated patient so much better!
Thank YOU!!
Your video is very informative and easy to understand. I am new to Ventilator. How to connect ventilator to patient and machine. . It would be very helpful to post a video show how gas flows from ventilator to patient and how exhale gas flows from patient to atmosphere. Thanks.
Thank you! In these crazy times, I want to know these things in case our ICU nurses become overloaded .
Me too . I am retired but was a ICU , Trauma nurse 17 years ago
I feel like im back in class! Thank you Professor Gail Lupica. I graduated from CSN Dec.2013. You did not have thees videos when I was in school. But so happy I found this. Just wanted to brush up on vents. Thank you!!
Grace A., RN
Aw, You’re so welcome Grace!
I’m a mechatronics technician from Brazil, I’m researching breath mechanics to build ventilators to help people…. Thank you by share your knowledge!
Hi i have a question in regards to an idea i have right now.
Perhaps this video could be the start of a “first aider’s” guide to operating a ventilator and running an ICU caring for #covid19 patients in case med staff are unavailable? Not enough people are taking precautions and overflow is happening. Could help worldwide with the #coronavirus, especially in places where ICUs and trained med staff are nonexistent.
That’s my interest too
I am a mechanical engineer (2019 graduate) working for a small-mid size aerospace tier-2 supplier. I’ve been researching ventilators this week to see if we can re purpose our machinist or deburring operators to manufacture parts for ventilators for the pandemic. I do not know if this is possible for us, but if anyone can point me into a direction for ventilator supply companies or prints or manufacturers I would appreciate it. We have CNC, fabrication, assembly, and 3d printing capabilities.
renee davenport man, so cool. A respiratory care practitioner will be a specialist in ventilators and critical care. 😭💕
Hi we think we located a dozen old ones and will be checking them out not sure if they work .
Tomorrow
I’m software developer let me know if I can help
@Jeremiah Isaacson I know a guy who knows a guy in St. Louis who wants to make a ventilator using a Raspberry Pi to control it.
I’m a software engineer. Let me know if you need help with anything.
Will need to address recycling contagian neutralization for patient re-use

Just call Respiratory Therapy..
But respiratory therapists are the specialists! 🤞🏻💕🥰
It says NURSING STUDENTS.
I totally agree. Let’s face it- A few ventilator classes cannot compare to 2 years of ventilator education.
Thanks Gail!! You rock!! I hope to be half the nurse educator you are one day!!
Thanks for such a great lecture

Great video thank you.
Yay for you!! Thank you!
Man, should we calculate tv with /kg the Wright of the pts or should we calculate it with height in cms?

Respiratory Teacher is proud to offer Tracheostomy Training Inservice
This training is offered to medical health care professionals and even those who are looking forward to use this skill in their future healthcare careers.
:Let Respiratory Teacher train your staff how to do tracheostomy care, suctioning and overall care of the trach patient. Tracheostomy and ventilators can make even the most seasoned healthcare practitioners uneasy. For many RT’s, RN’s, LPN/LVN’s, and CNA’s working in skilled nursing facilities, these patients will provide a new challenge and demand that they develop new skills. This inservice aims to take the mystery out of tracheostomy care. The latest technological advances for tracheostomy tubes will be reviewed. Through the use of video demonstration and thorough review of industry best practices, nurses and other healthcare practitioners will gain the knowledge and the confidence they will need to provide quality care.

My mom was just extubated..what I wanna know is can a certain climate or elevation effect breathing
Your videos are great! I’m not sure how much you know about maternity and pediatrics but a video on NCLEX preparation for those topics would be very helpful
tq mam
This was awesome, thank you
Great video! We are also seeing a lot of the ASV mode which focuses on achieving a pre- determined minute ventilation. This is a great mode for preventing barotrauma and auto peep.
most helpfull all these videos for more information
Awesome explanation! Thank you 🙂
This is great! Much easier to understand than the lecture I attended at school!
You are an amazing teacher. Concise, clear, knowledgable and effective. Thank you so much!!

You explain everything so clearly and non-rushed!
I absolutely love your videos. Thank you so much! You make everything seem much more clearer!
My hero as usual. I can actually connect the dots and explain ventilation now after watching your video a few times. WAY more productive learning than trying to read this information out of a book. Thank you!
Thankyou maam.. this video helped to understand everything abt ventilator..really a good work!!
Simple teaching..
I love you
SO helpful!! It was concise, practical and easy to understand. Thank you for creating these videos!!
This video just helped me process mechanical ventilation for my test! I was freaking out about the information for no reason. great breakdown! 🙂
Gabrielle Houston 👍
Good stuff. Starting on an LTACH this week and half our people are vents. Very well presented info. Thank you.
Excellent breakdown…thanks
Very informative. Thanks!
This helped me understand very well! Nice and simplified 🙂 thank you!
Thank you! I just started in the ICU as a new grad and your explanations helped me clear up some questions I had about ventilators. Looking forward to watching more of your videos 🙂
Great tutorial. I especially found your explanation of the relationship between PIP and tidal volume helpful.
You are a great educator. Thumbs up
thank you, mam, for this explanation my regards…
Good vid. Only thing, They say dont increase PEEP unless fio2 is less than 60%. Do they not teach this rule in nursing school?
Why isn’t respiratory in charge of the ventilators. It makes me sad as a therapist. In Canada , only the RRT’s are allowed to touch the ventilators and it’s not to be ignorant. It is just that we have more in depth knowledge about ventilators since it is our specialty.
Rule for an RT is you never go past 60% unless emergency situation. Increase the PEEP after 60% fio2.
What’s important for pre-licensure nursing is the concept of PEEP and it’s relation to FiO2 and not so much that actual threshold . I’m sure it’s different for RT students. 🙂
Let me know!
I will look it up in my book tomorrow and let you know.
Thank you Dr. Lupica
I like the way she says ‘ventilator ‘ !!!!!
Your videos are amazing. Thank you so much for all the work. It really helped me on my exam! 🙂
Emily, I’m really happy about that. Thank you for letting me know!
